Homeschoolers in Marin (HIM) is a diverse group of Christian homeschooling familiies based in Marin County. Our purpose is support, education, and friendship (both for our children and ourselves).
We have weekly park days, monthly mom book study (currently Seasons of a Mother's Heart by homeschooling veteran, Sally Clarkson), various field trips, curriculum sharing/swapping, and socials (moms only events, family potlucks, etc.). We communicate through our email list (coordinator sends out periodic messages) and our Facebook group.
Our members are from all over the county, as well as Petaluma and San Francisco. Many families are recent transplants to California and/or the Bay Area, so we represent a broad geographic spectrum. The same is true of our Christian associations, which span the three historic traditions (Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox), all of which are grounded in the belief that Jesus Christ is God and the Bible is God's Word.
Our homeschooling approaches are just as varied - some of us tend more toward Classical; others prefer Charlotte Mason; some take a more traditional classroom approach; still others use charter school programs like Pathways. Despite our leanings, most of us are eclectic in our curriculum choices, so our preferred styles don't keep us from experimenting with new materials and methods. That's the beauty of homeschooling!
Many HIM members are part of Marin Homeschool Co-op (MHC), which is a separate entity, open to all (regardless of religious affiliation). MHC currently serves elementary aged students (as well as their younger preschool-aged siblings). This past year (our first), we taught Latin, art, music, drama, and memory work. Our unit on Van Gogh included a field trip to the DeYoung Museum for the post-impressionist exhibit.
If you would like to join (no charge), please submit the following form, introducing yourself and explaining your interest in HIM and/or MHC. Or send an email to info at homeschoolersinmarin dot com.
